BIRGITT LUEBKEMANN

In Lübkemann’s paintings we find a constant regard for balance; compositional harmony through the manipulation of the visual elements, the balance of colour and, perhaps most significantly, the balance between light and dark, not in a ‘chiaroscuro’ manner full of binary bravado, but rather a subtle deployment of a nuanced palette which leaves the viewer at peace with the work and herself.

In the artist’s limited palette compositions we can see this balance of light and shade fitting very well with the Japanese ‘Notan’ system of composition, promoted by the American painter and teacher Arthur Dow who influenced the early work of Georgia O’Keefe – probably the artist with whose work aspects of ‘In Sinus’ best resonate.
